2. Affiliate programs with companies like Amazon.com and Kalahari.net – These companies pay you a commission everytime somebody buys from them after being redirected from your site.
3. Paid Advertising – If you are drawing lots of people to your site, you can charge for advertising space.

These methods are realistic and results can be verified. Look at your favourite sites and see how many of these strategies are used.

I have a website called MindMapTutor.com. This site is devoted to tutoring people on how to Mind Map. On this site, I have numerous articles to attract people. I sell my own product, our Learning Management Programme, an online tutoring programme. I am affiliated to both Amazon.com and Kalahari.net. Now let’s take a good blog ‘apart’ and highlight the elements that you should include.

1. Your Blog Header – You should give your blog a name and introduce it with a tag line that represents what you do. It can be the same tag line that you use for your company, or it can be one that you have developed just for your blog. Having a blog does not mean that you have to drop your existing website if you have one. Just ensure that your main website also drives people to your blog.
2. The actual Blog Post – A typical post consists of a date and a time. This is a good indication to readers of how active your blog is. The title of the blog post is very important as it should encourage potential customers to read further. You should also include Key Words in your title. I will cover Key Words in another post. The content appears below the title and can be long or short, depending on the topic. Use pictures, links, bullets and numbered lists to make it easier to read.
3. About Page – This should provide some brief information about you or your business. This is often more ‘chatty’ than other websites, but it doesn’t have to be. The choice is yours.
4. Contact Page – This should be in the form of a Contact Form, which captures the name, email address and comments of the person wishing to contact you. I suggest you add the ‘captcha’ element to prevent spam. Have a look at our contact form.
5. Archived Posts – This should be done automatically for you and can be archived by month or topic. Links to the archives are normally displayed in the sidebar of your blog. This organises your blog for you and makes it easier for visitors to browse your site.
6. Comments – This is a great feature that can provide you with valuable customer feedback. They don’t have to be displayed, so that you don’t have to worry about people damaging your business image through comments. You can publish the ones that will promote your business.

These are the basic elements, which will make your blog more professional. In the magazine template that I use, articles are categorised into Headline, Featured and Recent Posts.

The magazine layout is beautiful, professional and allows potential customers to quickly get an overview of what you have to offer. Most Internet users ’scan’ a website before they read further. By having your content in this format, it is more likely that they would click on a post to read it.
